STMA TO REPAIR BAD ROADS (PAGE 18, AUGUST 31, 2010)

A NUMBER of roads with serious defects in Sekondi/Takoradi, including the Kokompe road are to be rehabilitated with funding from the Road Fund.
The Metropolitan Director of Urban Roads, Mr William Donkor said rehabilitation would begin with repairs on the 800 metre stretch of the five kilometre Kokompe road.
This, he said would be followed by graveling of the road with accompanying street lights to improve illumination.
He said the department met with various leaders at Kokompe to discuss the project.
Aside Kokompe, he said the 8.2km road linking the main Accra-Takoradi road at BU to Apolo was one of the targeted roads for rehabilitation.
According to him, putting that road in good shape was very important as it would ease traffic in the metropolis.
Mr Donkor said the department was considering redesigning the road to a dual carriage one and in future construct another bypass that will cut off the central business district to ease congestion.
“But as that called for heavy funding, we would currently make sure the road is put in shape since the current situation was not the best”, he added.
Mr Donkor hinted, however, that maintenance works on the Axim Road roundabout had been halted to enable the department to conduct a study to come out with the real problem confronting the area which experiences constant flooding.
He said the department realised that the culverts under the roundabout were choked, but more importantly, they were too small to allow for cleaning.
Mr Donkor said as a result of the narrow nature of the drain under the roundabout, water from the hilly parts of the area to the roundabout caused it to flood.
He gave the assurance that whatever fund was allocated to the rehabilitation under the road fund would be used to ensure that the communities became beneficiaries.
